Hi lovelies & welcome back. Recently when I was planning some new fashion content for the blog, it dawned on me that I actually spend 80% of my time each week at work. 5 days a week, in an office which granted doesn’t have a ‘dress code’ or uniform as such, but there are business rules to abide by like knee length skirts, no vest tops, no crop tops, no open toe shoes etc. We can wear jeans though which is an absolute winner.
This led me onto thinking how much my day-to-day style is quite limited and I realised that I can only really wear what I truly want to, on my days off or at the weekend which let’s face it, is a very small timeframe in comparison.
Dressing for work can be quite challenging, for example I want to dress stylishly and in fashion but at the same time I don’t want to wear all of my favourite new items in work because then I’ll have nothing to get excited about wearing for a little coffee date or shopping day at the weekend. I don’t have enough money to buy double the amount of new clothes each month to enable me to have a completely separate ‘work’ and ‘home’ wardrobe, so there begins the dilemma.
It can also be very easy to fall into a rut with your work wardrobe and rotate the same pair of jeans and roll neck 3 times a week, which again is a dilemma for me as it’s not something I want to do.
For me, clothing is a way to express myself and I’ve always loved trying new items and styling them appropriately for each occasion, so this is something I want to continue as much as possible with my work wear as well.
Anywayyyyyy, all these thoughts got me thinking – surely there’s other people out there who feel the same and might be looking for some inspiration to help change up their every day look? So I decided to start a new series here called ‘The Workwear Edit’. Once or twice a month I’m hoping to create a new workwear look, combining new pieces with some existing items in my wardrobe which will keep me on point and stop me getting stuck in my own rut, but will also (fingers crossed) inspire some of you guys to do the same and challenge yourselves daily with what you choose to wear for work.
This first outfit is a bit of a classic, easy to throw on look for me at the moment. I love wearing black so it keeps me in my comfort zone that way but I get to throw a couple of my favourites pieces into the mix too.
Skinny jeans and a black top are a great base for an everyday work outfit. Here I have chosen a short sleeve, high neck top but I’ve worn this look before with an oversized baggy t-shirt underneath, a roll neck or even a thin jersey jumper. The key bits which make this stand out, are the check blazer and ankle length sock boots – both of which I’m a bit obsessed with at the moment.
The sock boots are Topshop and I went for the midi-heel as I never sit still at work so needed something to double up as both comfortable and stylish. They are exactly that and since buying them I’ve worn them with absolutely any outfit I can get away with.
This check blazer is one I bought around November time last year from Bershka, it’s a little oversized and has padded shoulders which I love as they make the jacket that bit more structured. I’ve recently seen a few new check blazers come into stock for Spring which are a little lighter in colour and have white buttons instead of black like this one here which, might I add, is already on my wish list ready for payday.
The sunnies are obviously an optional extra for inside the office; unless you are nursing an extremely tough hangover from the night before I would not advise sitting at your desk with them strapped to your face all day – but if you do want to get your hands on a pair for your lunch time strolls, these bad boys were just over £2 from eBay – Bargain ‘Ell Fire, I know!..
So there we have it, my first work wear edit. I know this look doesn’t break into new realms of style and creativity but it’s an outfit I’m loving at the moment and it’s a good one for giving off all those girl boss vibes.
Absolutely loving this outfit!
